The Procuratoria di San Marco maintains and manages the Basilica Marciana. Attested since the 9th century, it is today one of 25 Fabbricerie in Italy. Consecrated in 1094, Basilica di San Marco is a true jewel of Byzantine architecture. Located in the lowest area of the city, it has suffered much damage from the intervening increase in the frequency of high water over the past 150 years.

The Procuratoria, in cooperation with expert hydraulic engineers, designed a defense capable of protecting the basilica from high waters, which the Italian state built. Since November 2021, the venerable building has not suffered any more tidal invasions; it is a temporary glass barrier that will be removed when the protection system of the entire Marcian insula comes into operation.

The Procuratoria’s workers conduct ongoing interventions dedicated to consolidating the structural members, restoring the wall mosaics, marble coverings, opus sectile and tessellatum flooring, and repaving the wooden domes and roofs.
